Tsepo Tshola leads talented line-up of performers at Birchwood

Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Tsepo Tshola, will take to the Birchwood Hotel stage to lead the Birchwood Comes Alive Jazz Evening on Friday, 6 July in Boksburg. Supporting Tshola is a stellar line-up of local acts, each stamping their unique mark on the industry and introducing their own modern takes on classical genres.

In partnership with The City of Ekurhuleni, baritone maestro, Tshola, will headline the evening with his Afro-Soul and Gospel sounds. Formerly, Tshola was the lead singer and composer in the legendary band Sankomota which was formed in 1976. His illustrious career has seen him work with industry greats such as Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie, and most recently, Casper Nyovest.

Supporting Tshola is Johannesburg-based Afro-Pop artist Malik Zwane, who is making a comeback after a two year break. Inspired by a variety of genres, some of his musical influences include Maxwell, R Kelly, Bob Marley, Miriam Makeba and Bilal.

Setting the tone for the evening is the Music Academy of Gauteng Jazz Orchestra; a community-based NGO focused on musical education for youth from disadvantaged families and informal settlements. Founded by well-known trumpeter Johnny Mekoa, the Academy has hosted many talented international Jazz professors who share their expertise in workshops and classes.

Joining resident comedian and MC, Hector Motivator and adding a comedic element to the evening, is award-winning comedian Sifiso Nene. Known for his hilarious cultural commentary, Nene has made numerous television appearances; including the film “Taxi Ride”.
