True taste of Africa at Birchwood Hotel’s newest addition

Business travelling foodies passing through Gauteng can look forward to a uniquely African dining experience with the launch of business tourism giant, The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre’s new on-site restaurant, Phomolong.

Aptly named “vacation” in Southern Sotho, Phomolong’s decor is a modern take on traditional African design and includes a rustic thatch roof with wooden decking, contemporary furniture and a modern open kitchen.

“The upgrade and improvement to this section of property was implemented to augment our guests’ experience by providing more variety and choice for their dining experiences,” explains Birchwood Hotel’s Marketing Manager, Greg Hoffmann.

Situated less than 15 minutes away from OR Tambo International Airport and with an hourly complimentary shuttle bus service running between the two, the hotel plays host to the thousands of local and international business delegates each year.

Led by Head Chef, Shannon Jooste, Phomolong is situated in the heart of the hotel’s 53ha of gardens, and is the latest addition to The Birchwood Hotel’s existing repertoire of onsite, speciality restaurants namely The BC Café, a popular lunchtime meetings venue, and The Grill at OneTwenty, an upmarket grill house.

“Shannon has had nine years of experience in the Hospitality, Food and Beverage Industry, and, after proving his versatility among our various onsite catering facilities, we are delighted to be furthering our restaurant offering with him,” says Hoffmann.

Complementing the hotel’s expansive 665 room offering and 60 business conferencing venues, the addition of another restaurant allows in-house guests the option of eating dinner at a different venue each night.

As talented chefs prepare a broad selection of buffet meals and desserts in semi-outdoor serving stations, Phomolong offers a warm, entertaining environment as guests view the cooking action while dishing up their hearty meals.

“Guests can interact with our chefs during food serving; offering a unique, personalised dining experience,” says Hoffmann.

Prioritising convenience in the metropolis of Johannesburg is central to the business model of The Birchwood Hotel; which boasts a Mangwanani Day Spa, a fully kitted out gym, a sparkling blue pool, and squash courts on the hotel’s sprawling grounds. Phomolong, as with all of Birchwood Hotel’s onsite facilities, is a product of the feedback that has been received from the hotel’s valuable clientele.

“As the market leader in facilitating SA’s Business Tourism Industry, we are constantly finding ways to modify our offering to match the needs of the business travellers passing through. The launch of Phomolong is another way we strive to keep our customers happy,” said Hoffmann.
