Stimela, Hotstix to present a night of afro-fusion at Birchwood

Legendary, platinum-selling Afro-fusion band, Stimela, will lead an evening of proudly South African talent, in commemoration of Heritage Month, at the Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz Evening on Friday, 8 September at The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conferencing Centre in Boksburg.

Stimela, founded by the late Ray Phiri in the 1970’s, is well-known for confronting the Apartheid era by uniting the nation with their collective sounds. Having been nominated for four South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and receiving a Silver Order of Ikhanyanga from President Jacob Zuma, Stimela is a symbol of overcoming South Africa’s turbulent history.

Joining Stimela is SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse whose diverse musical talents have led to him becoming an Afro-pop sensation. Hotstix, as he is affectionately known, has mastered a variety of instruments including African drums, flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute, and timbales.

Also set to perform on the Birchwood stage is the Soweto Opera Quadro, four classically trained singers from Soweto. Since their formation in 2003, the group has become locally and internationally renowned for their African Jazz Opera, Classical Jazz, Afro-pop and contemporary genres.

Each month The Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz Evening showcases emerging local talent. This month, The Levites return to captivate the audience with their Afro-Soul sounds.

In partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni, the Mail & Guardian, the Sowetan and SAfm, resident MC and motivational speaker, Hector Motivator, along with comedians’ Schoolboy and Tshekidi Moneymore will be providing plenty of hilarious local entertainment.
