To enjoy the full effects of all the mind-blowing 3D effects, make sure you book your tickets to watch Star Trek Beyond: the IMAX® 3D Experience in one of the seven Ster-Kinekor IMAX theatres, situated at Eastgate and Cradlestone Mall in Johannesburg, Mall of Africa in Midrand, The Grove Mall in Pretoria, Gateway in Durban, Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth and CapeGate in Cape Town.
Halfway through their five-year mission, the USS Enterprise enters uncharted territory on the fringes of Federation Space, where it is almost destroyed by a powerful, relentless and unknown alien threat. Now stranded on a remote and mysterious planet with no hope of rescue, Kirk must work to reunite his crew and defend themselves in a bid to get home alive.
The assault comes from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy from sucking the life out of his victims. He is in search of an ancient and valuable artefact that he believes is aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.
Star Trek Beyond is directed by Justin Lin. This film reunites Jon Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella, Lydia Wilson and Joe Taslim also join the star-studded cast line-up.
Based upon Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, the film’s writers are Roberto Orci and John D. Payne & Patrick Mckay; and Douglas Jung and Simon Pegg. The film is produced by J.J. Abrams and Roberto Orci, and Justin Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment. The executive producers are Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Lindsey Weber.
Justin Lin, director of the latest Star Trek film, commented that he was very conscious about creating Star Trek Beyond to ensure that it embodied and should be viewed as a big screen movie experience in order for the audience to have the feel of the movie.
The IMAX release of Star Trek Beyond is digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of An IMAX 3D Experience ® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customised theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they too are winging their way through outer space.
