Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has on Sunday announced the suggested new national minimum wage as R3500 per month or R20 per hour. Among mixed reactions, the South African Reward Association (SARA) has welcomed the announcement.
“I think the minimum wage amount is a fair balance between job preservation on the one hand and exploitation on the other,” says Master Reward Specialist Dr Mark Bussin, Executive Committee Member at SARA and chairperson of 21st Century. “If the minimum wage is too high, people will lose jobs. If it is too low, people are being exploited. This is a fair balance in my view. It is definitely a step in the right direction and will hopefully go some way to alleviate the wage gap.”
