Proposed new private hospital for Parys will boost demand for homes, says Pam Golding Properties

The property market in Parys, situated in the Northern Free State along the banks of the Vaal River and just over an hour from Johannesburg, is showing a healthy growth of around 12 percent year on year, a trend set to continue as a number of new commercial projects are in the pipeline for Parys and the number of weekend visitors continues to grow.

Says Phil Medlock, Pam Golding Properties area principal in Parys and Sasolburg: “There is a proposed private hospital in the pipeline which we believe will make a huge difference to the Parys area as the closest medical facility of this nature is currently about 50km away and is the reason why many elderly people relocate.

“The Parys property market has always been active but recently is attracting people looking not only for a weekend lock up and go property but also on a permanent basis, either to retire or to commute to the office in Johannesburg or the greater Vaal Triangle area.

“Parys is accessed by a number of excellent highways with the R59 extending all the way to Alberton, a mere 60 minutes away and Johannesburg easily accessed via the N1 highway.”

For weekenders, tourists and travellers Parys is renowned for its restaurants, numerous art galleries, antique shops, craft shops and micro breweries as well as being the inland adventure capital of South Africa. From white water rafting and sky diving to hiking, abseiling and zip lining, Parys and the nearby World Heritage Site, the Vredefort Dome, has it all.

In addition, the town and surrounding areas have more than 100 guest houses and lodges catering to all needs as more and more people are looking to escape to the countryside.

Says Medlock: “Parys certainly ticks all the boxes. It has a number of housing options from secure complexes and golf estates to free standing homes, while period homes are highly sought after with many featuring original wooden floors and pressed ceilings and dating back to the early 1900s.

“Pricing starts at around R450 000 for three bedroom, two bathroom freestanding houses in town, or two bedroom two bathroom units in complexes. Property prices on the golf estates start at R250 000 for stands measuring from 600sqm to houses from R2.5 million which would acquire top finishes and from three bedrooms.

“The most popular pricing remains in the R450 000 to R800 000 bracket with a number of value for money buys available. At present we have a number of period homes available for purchase starting at around R600 000 and needing some renovation, to fully restored properties with views over the golf course set along the river and priced from R850 000.”
