Pave your way to a career in finance

By in Business, Economy, Finance on December 1, 2016

This is the time of year that learners are choosing their field of study.

Traditionally many will opt to go the university route and unfortunately not all will gain acceptance primarily due to the infrastructure and resources that are available in South Africa.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, CIMA offers matriculants the ability to pursue a career in finance despite non-entry into the formal higher education system through the Certificate in Business Accounting (Cert BA). Cert BA is an entry route of the institute’s Professional Qualification. By studying Cert BA students will be equipped with a solid understanding of fundamental accounting, management, business and finance. Furthermore, candidates develop skills in financial reporting, forecasting, data analysis and more.

From January 2017 the Cert BA syllabus has been updated to align it with the CIMA Professional Qualification to create a closer relevance to the Chartered Global Management Accountant Competency Framework which identifies the skills that finance professionals need to drive the success of their organisations.

The certificate can be completed either as a standalone qualification or as a foundation to completing the Professional Qualification and earning the globally recognised Chartered Global Management Accountant designation (CGMA) conferred by CIMA and the Association of International Certified Public Accountants.

The Cert BA does not require any formal entry qualifications. As such it provides open access to a stand-alone business and finance qualification. Students are expected to have a good level of mathematics and English to successfully complete the qualification. To complete the Cert BA a student must:

Register as a student with CIMA

Study for, sit and pass four computer-based assessments, as defined within the syllabus. Where an applicant holds a prior relevant qualification, they may be able to apply for an exemption from one or more of the four examinations. Being a CIMA student carries a lot of benefits and some of the exciting ones include:

  • Computer based exams, offered at over 5000 Pearson VUE exam centres world-wide, increasing exam availability and flexibility. CIMA students can schedule exams around all their commitments and study at their own pace. Students can complete the Cert BA even during a GAP year.

  • Cert BA is a business-fit qualification. CIMA engages in global research with employers to identify the skills they require from business and finance professionals. This resulted in the development of the CGMA Competency Framework which underpins the CIMA Professional Qualification and allows students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competence to employers and become more employable.
  • CIMA students are a connected community. Through CIMAConnect, the mobile friendly and exclusive online platform, students can connect, help each other prepare for exams and get access to free study resources. It’s a great way to find a study buddy, share tips and to ask for advice. All you need is your CIMA contact ID and password which you will get when you register as a CIMA student.
  • CIMA qualifications are recognised by employers worldwide. CGMAs work in all of the world’s top 100 brands, and are at the heart of thousands of small and medium sized businesses across the world, helping drive sustainable business success.

With this said and done, there is no need for hopelessness. Opportunities are countless and there is more ways to the boardroom.
