MUT Faculty of Natural Sciences honours Dr Sphiwe Felix Mkhize

Professional Natural Scientist and Agronomist, Dr Siphiwe Felix Mkhize will be honoured by the Faculty of Natural Sciences tomorrow, 19 April at 10am at the MUT 2016 graduation ceremony that will be held at the Dr Pixley ka Seme hall on the main campus. Dr Mkhize is currently the Head of Provincial and State Owned Entities’ performance monitoring at the KZN Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

He is an experienced agricultural and development practitioner who has both South African and international experience. He has worked on all levels of agriculture (policy, planning, monitoring and implementation) and he has represented the South African agricultural sector on various forums abroad and locally. Dr Mkhize holds a PhD in sustainable ecological management from the University of Pretoria and a Masters of Philosophy degree in Applied Ethics from Stellenbosch University.

Bonginkosi Mthembu, Head of Department: Community Extension said they decided to honour Dr Mkhize for his expertise and immense contribution in the fields of Agriculture, Extension and development at various levels. “Dr Mkhize will highlight the importance of the Natural Sciences especially Agriculture and also making specific reference to its meaningful contribution to the social and economic challenges faced by the country. It is important to highlight the importance of Agriculture to our students because is instrumental in the sustainability of human life, maintaining a stable economy.” Mthembu said Dr Mkhize will also encourage students to further their studies in the field of Natural Sciences in order to generate and develop new technologies for sustainable development of the country.

Dr Mkhize will be accompanied by members of his family, the MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Cyril Xaba and the chairperson of the Agriculture and Rural Development portfolio committee in KZN, Themba Mthembu.
