5The Gary Kirsten Cricket Foundation has joined hands with Langa Cricket Club ahead of the club cricket season.
A groundbreaking campaign awaits for Langa who will be competing in the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Premier for the very first time.
GKC’s Kholekile Matikinca has been unveiled as the player/coach for the season in Langa’s quest to compete on club’s cricket’s biggest stage in the province.
“The project got underway a few weeks ago with Gary Kirsten, Kholekile and myself running coaching sessions twice a week in the evenings,” GKC Director of Coaching, Ryan Van Niekerk said.
“We decided to go in and help because it is important that they are equipped and have the skills to do well in their first season,” he added.
The club has a long history of producing top players with the likes of Proteas players, Temba Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile coming through their ranks.
“There is a fantastic energy around the club and the players have stepped up in training to ensure they take their game to the next level,” Van Niekerk said.
“We have been doing some specific one-on-one drill work and they have shown the will to improve on a weekly basis, he added.
The GK Foundation will continue their work with the club throughout the season to make sure they maintain their levels and hopefully take out a few big club cricket scalps along the way.
