Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) from the Western Cape are invited to register for free and attend the penultimate SMME Opportunity Roadshow, which takes place from 08:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, 6 September 2016 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (ICC). The Roadshow functions as a showcase of opportunities available to SMMEs and provides focused guidance to business owners to assist them to make the most of their competitive advantage. Cape Town is the third (and penultimate) city to host the SMME Opportunity Roadshow in 2016.
According to the most recent employment statistics released by Statistics South Africa, unemployment increased by 129 000 people to its second quarter (2016) figure of 15.5-million unemployed. This increase was driven by job losses in the Services (3.5%), Agriculture (5%), Transport (4.4%) and Mining (5.1%) sectors*. These statistics are yet another stern reminder of South Africa’s need for more entrepreneurs to create sustainable job opportunities.
“The SMME Opportunity Roadshow is a valuable educational event that helps SMMEs discover how to implement a winning business model that will create jobs and improve employee skills,” says Abigail Botha, Event Manager at Cape Media, organisers of the SMME Opportunity Roadshows.
The unrelenting increase in food and petrol prices, strike action in government service delivery, as well as South Africa’s credit rating narrowly avoiding being slapped with the “junk status” label, are just some of the significant obstacles preventing entrepreneurial businesses from flourishing. Business owners have to take these factors into account on a daily basis as they directly affect business growth. Now, more than ever, they need the guidance of seasoned industry experts in making difficult but necessary decisions.
“We understand the difficult environment in which small businesses have to operate and the challenges they endure,” says Botha. “However, we believe that successful entrepreneurs are needed to build a strong and thriving economy in South Africa, and this is why we want to provide them with the vital resources needed to transform their drive, passion and ambition into a sustainable business.”
Participating SMMEs in Cape Town will be empowered through Master Classes in:
- The Fundamentals of Sustaining & Growing SMMEs.
- Enabling Funding for SMMEs.
- Scaling up SMMEs: The Future Growth Drivers of the SA Economy.
Western Cape businesses are also invited to exhibit on the day and network during the engaging break-away sessions. The Programme Director for the day is Justin Asher of Picup Technologies, while other invited speakers include Luvuyo Rani (Silulo Ulutho Technologies), Adii Pienaar (Receiptful & Rockstar Foundation) and Prof Edith de Vries (Director-General, Department of Small Business Development) Tshidi Mahlangu (SAA).
“Cape Town is without a doubt one of the world’s most iconic cities. As a thriving, multicultural city with a unique urban design, it boasts a vibrant business dynamic where up-and-coming businesses operate in conjunction with several of the country’s major retail groups, insurance companies and designer companies headquartered in the city,” shares Botha. “This will set the stage for thrilling and valuable knowledge sharing that is not to be missed.”
