The competition aims to stimulate interest in young learners and to broaden their knowledge about astronomy.
The Astronomy quiz is an annual competition organized by South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) and is open for grade 7 learners only. The first and second round of the competition was held at the Mafikeng Campus on 23 May and 3 August. The finals were recently held at the Science Centre of the NWU Potchefstroom Campus.
According to the Science Centre manager at Mafikeng, Ms Lerato Molebatsi, it was a tough competition and every school was well prepared and determined to win. Sol Plaatje Primary School stood out for Mafikeng and also went onto claim the Provincial title. They also represented the province last year at the national competition which will be held in Gauteng in October this year.
